毕业留声- Voice of Graduate Student | KEE YO CHAO

My name is Kee Yo Chao(纪荣招), a Malaysian that gonna finish Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, ZUST. Initially, I had planned to pursue further studies at Monash University in Australia. However, after a heartfelt conversation with my father—who has been traveling to China for business for over 20 years—I decided to change course. He spoke passionately about China's rapid development over the past few decades and suggested that it might be a valuable opportunity to study and explore the country.

My great-grandparents were among the many Chinese who migrated to Southeast Asia during the end of Qing Dynasty, seeking better prospects through work and trade. As the fifth generation in my family since their migration, I felt a strong desire to reconnect with my roots and explore the land they once called home.

China's vastness made it difficult to choose a specific destination for my studies, but my father recommended Hangzhou—a city known for its natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and poetic charm, symbolized by the iconic West Lake. After considering several options, I ultimately chose to enroll at Zhejiang University of Science and Technology (ZUST), where I was fortunate to receive a scholarship.

My first year of study coincided with the pandemic, and attending online classes was challenging due to technical difficulties like lagging and blurry screens. Determined to study in China in person, I joined the second batch of Malaysian students selected to return through a special program arranged between Malaysia and the Chinese Embassy. The journey included a three-week quarantine, during which I received invaluable support from SOIE in preparing the necessary visa documents.

Arriving in China was a transformative experience. Everything felt fresh, new, and incredibly advanced. I had initially expected a lonely journey, coming to a foreign country by myself, but I soon found a welcoming community in Ting Song. I made many passionate and supportive friends who helped me feel at home.

Adapting to the academic environment in China took time, as it differed from what I was used to in Malaysia. However, with persistence and support from both peers and professors, I gradually adjusted. Being from a Chinese-speaking family, I passed the HSK Level V exam with ease, giving me more freedom to explore the country during my free time. I traveled to multiple cities and immersed myself in China’s diverse culture and history, all while maintaining strong academic performance. In every semester after the online learning period, my average score was consistently above 80, making me eligible to apply for the Excellent Degree Student Scholarship.

Throughout my four years at ZUST, I actively participated in various school activities and built unforgettable memories. I am deeply grateful to the teachers and staff who guided and cared for me throughout my academic journey.

Studying in China has been a life-changing experience. It not only broadened my horizons but also reshaped my values. I’ve learned to cherish the present and appreciate every moment—because these experiences become treasured memories that last a lifetime.

Thank you for reading my story—now it’s your turn to create your own unforgettable journey at ZUST.
