My name is Léandre Pchillon(乐安德), a young Frenchman who has had the incredible chance to travel all the way to China, to Zhejiang University of Science and Technology (ZUST) in Hangzhou, to learn, grow, and deeply immerse myself in Chinese culture. From the very beginning, I committed myself fully to studying the Chinese language, determined not just to live here, but to truly understand this country from the inside out.
When I first arrived at China, I felt lost and stressed. The language, the tones, the writing, the rhythm of daily life, everything was intense. But very quickly, I was surrounded by wonderful people. I made beautiful friendships, experienced unforgettable moments, and realized that this journey would be so much more than just studying. I decided early on, that I would say “yes” to everything. That simple mindset opened every door.
Every day brings something new, a temple to visit, a museum to explore, a new activity, or a conversation with someone that changes my perspective. I never get bored. My greatest passion isn’t one specific thing; it’s discovery itself. The sharing, the friendships, and the memories created along the way.
Of course, there were tough times too. Learning Chinese is a formidable challenge. Despite my daily revisions, the tones, the characters, and the speed of progress sometimes test my patience. But these difficulties have taught me that talent alone is not enough. Persistence, humility, and the willingness to keep going are what truly lead to success. I still have a long way to go before I can call myself fluent, but I am determined to continue until I can fully express myself and discover even deeper layers of this culture.
Along the way, I also discovered new sides of myself. I became more comfortable taking initiative, speaking up, and stepping into visible roles. The China experience, and ZUST in particular, pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me grow personally in ways I never expected.
As I look ahead, I do so with an open heart and deep gratitude. Thanks to the scholarship I received, I will be able to continue my studies here next year. I don’t have a rigid plan for the future, I prefer to let destiny guide me. What I know for sure is that I want to keep learning Chinese, stay in China, help new international students integrate, and contribute to university life through events and activities.
China and ZUST have given me one of the most beautiful human experiences of my life. In just seven months, I feel transformed, more open, more confident, more curious, and more alive.
To anyone reading this, no matter where you come from: If you feel a call toward something new, go for it. Say yes. Embrace the discomfort. The road isn’t always easy, but every step is worth it. The friendships, the discoveries, and the personal growth you will experience will stay with you forever.
I am incredibly grateful to be here, and I hope my story can inspire even one person to dare to follow their own path of discovery.
